Lesson 2:  Death in a Sinful World

Outlined by: Pastor Abraham M. del Rosario, DMin

Memory Verse: “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—” (Rom. 5:12, NKJV).

God created a perfect world without sin, evil, violence, insecurity, sickness, and death. Rebellion and disobedience started in heaven but were transferred to the earth when Adam and Eve sinned, and the great controversy between good and evil began on earth. God put enmity between evil and humanity so that humans would not be enchanted and snared by evil but would be able to say no while clinging to Him for wisdom and strength. The creator God brough a solution to sending the Promised Seed (Gen. 3:15).

Freedom (Gen. 2:16,17)

Truth

“You may freely eat of every tree in the garden.” (Gen. 2:16). No existence of sin and death.

Tension

Eve beheld the serpent joyfully eating the forbidden fruit without dying (PP, 54).

Test

“but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Gen. 2:17).

Lesson: Our choice will have eternal consequences

Forbidden Fruit

Satan misleading strategies…

Deception:

Satan generalized God’s specific command. “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” (Gen. 3:1).

Satan contradict God’s word. “You will not surely die.” (Gen. 3:4)

Satan accused God, “For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Gen. 3:5).

Death (PS. 115:17, PS. 146:4)

Eve doubts God’s word and use her senses to decide.

Dietary perspective: “the tree was good for food.”

Logical analysis “the tree was desirable to make one wise.”

READ: 1 Thess. 5:21

Lesson: Death came as the result of turning away from God and living an autonomous and independent life from Him: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Gen. 3:19). Through Adam’s disobedience, “death spread to all” (Rom. 5:12). Death is an intruder and our enemy (1 Cor. 15:26).

Decay (Gen. 3:19, Rom. 5:12)

“As we witnessed in drooping flower and falling leaf the first sign of decay. Adam and his companion mourned more deeply than men now mourn over their dead. The death of the frail, delicate flowers was indeed a cause of sorrow; but when the goodly trees cast off their leaves, the scene brought vividly to mind the stern fact that death is the portion of every living thing (PP, 62).

Forgiveness

God provide garment (Gen. 3:21)

God creates enmity . . . so that we can hate evil (Gen. 3:15)

God promises to send the Seed (Gen. 3:15).

Lesson: The Messiah will become humanity’s Redeemer and Savior, and His victorious, deliberate death will ultimately destroy Satan. The Messiah is the Victor and gives victory to all who connect with Him (Rom. 8:1-4, Rev. 12:7-12)
