ADRA Responds to Deadly Earthquake in Cebu, Calls for Prayers and Support

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is on the ground in Cebu after a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck northern Cebu late September 30, leaving at least 61 people dead and dozens injured, according to initial reports .

The earthquake’s epicenter was located near Bogo City, where collapsed homes and falling debris claimed multiple lives. San Remigio also suffered heavy losses, including the collapse of the municipal sports complex, which resulted in several fatalities. Thousands of families have evacuated their homes in fear of aftershocks, many spending the night in open spaces .

ADRA Philippines immediately activated its emergency network, deploying its response team alongside Adventist Community Services partners. The agency has begun conducting rapid needs assessments in the hardest-hit areas, gathering critical data to guide relief efforts. The Central Visayan Conference and the Central Philippine Union Conference have pledged counterpart support to ensure resources are mobilized quickly .

“Beyond the devastation, what we see are communities in urgent need of food, water, shelter, and medical care,” said Edwin Rivera, ADRA Philippines finance director. “Our teams are working closely with church networks and local governments to assess needs and prepare for immediate interventions.”

The response comes as ADRA has already been stretched thin across the Philippines, with teams responding to back-to-back typhoons that have battered the nation in recent weeks. Despite the challenges, ADRA is coordinating with its global network and humanitarian partners to mobilize additional funding and support .

Southern Asia-Pacific Division (SSD) President Pastor Roger Caderma urged church members to stand in solidarity with affected families through acts of compassion.

“We appeal to our brothers and sisters across the division to extend your help through donations, service, and especially prayers,” Pastor Caderma said. “Many of our provinces are suffering under the weight of successive calamities. In times like these, the love of Jesus shines brightest when His church comes together to comfort, restore, and uplift those in need.”

ADRA is appealing for continued prayers and support to sustain its efforts in reaching displaced families who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. With aftershocks continuing and lifelines such as electricity, water, and telecommunications disrupted, the agency emphasizes that sustained support will be critical in helping affected provinces recover.

“As we respond to yet another disaster, we ask for your prayers for those who are suffering,” Rivera said. “Together, we can bring comfort, hope, and life-saving assistance to communities in their time of greatest need.”
